My father-in-law is a veteran, as is my sister. A few years back, Roger wrote a poem about his time in the Army and he also put on his old uniform. I did a little photo editing and placed the “current Roger” alongside the “younger Roger”. I hope you enjoy the poem and the picture. Above all, honor those that served. We should be truly grateful.
MEET MY UNCLE SAM Roger Lynn Musgrave 1956 / 2021 Just rubber boots, I had a pair, There on the farm, what I would wear. No uniform of any kind, Sometimes the clothes, not even mine. Hand-me-downs from brothers, four, Those were the clothes that I wore. That all changed when Uncle Sam, Sent me notice of his plan. Took me from my dairy-farm tools, To fit me with his Army shoes. Guess my barn clothes were too tacky, Dressed me in the color khaki. Boots, a uniform, and a hat my size, At Ft. Jackson, just one of the guys. Dog tags, my name around my neck, Boots shined? Let me double-check. He fed me, took care of my every need, Turned out the light, when time to sleep. Called my name each day at dawn, Making sure I wasn’t gone. Careful not to give much space, Fearing a liability case. Considered we were all so dumb, Like we had never seen a gun. No bullets with the gun we got, The Army way, how we were taught. Like a mother, the Army would be, To me and my brothers in B Company. Gave us all the rank of Private First Class, About the time our first year had passed. That’s where I got this uniform you see, 65 years ago, the Army gave it to me.
This poem is awesome as is the photo!
May God bless you and your family. Thank you for your service. God bless America!
